DIY – writing center

August 6, 2009

In honor of kimbaDIY

This week my crafty/design blog reading converged into creating a writing center for the kiddos.

with a dash of

Bookmaking With Kids for guilt

So, armed with Mod Podge and JoAnn’s 19-cent sale scrapbook paper (how to mollify children when I drag them into a craft store)….

jar-writing(“writing prompts”)

Begat box-onceuponA “tin” box, formerly of Chinese almond cookie glory, mod-podged with some precious StoryBook scrap paper and glue-gunned with a length of jute twine to finish the edges. This holds some kiddie book-making supplies.

And the rest of the writing center, made from a neglected “Napa Valley” 9o’s vintage cd crate:

box-writingI’m still compiling things, but so far there are sharpened pencils, a nifty school-worthy pencil sharpener, the jar-o-writing prompts, crayons, envelopes, assorted papers, scissors, glue, etc.  Next to it is an Ikea magazine file (awaiting its mod podged glory, no doubt) filled with more paper, notepads, and journals.  Now our other bookcase is getting a “math center” makeover.

What is a frustrated teacher-without-a-real-job to do over the summer anyway?

Also, a sneak peak at the middle of a DIY project:
